Final Project

Final Project

Muslim Architectural Logo Design

For our final project, our group focused on Muslim architecture by designing a logo with cultural symbolic significance. We applied this logo to daily items such as bags and tissue boxes, aiming to express the aesthetic value of Muslim culture in an accessible way.

Research Background

Initially, our research direction was broad, exploring the application of Muslim culture in daily design, including tableware, phone cases, and pen holders. However, based on feedback from our supervisor, we realized the need to refine our focus.

After re-evaluating our approach, we chose Muslim architecture as our core research area. Mosque architecture not only represents Islamic cultural values, but also features intricate geometric patterns, calligraphic decorations, and unique structural elements, making it an ideal source of design inspiration.

Research Process

To ensure our design was culturally authentic and meaningful, we conducted extensive research, including:

  • Group Member Contributions: One of our group members, a Chinese Muslim, shared insights about mosques in her hometown, providing photos and materials.
  • Cross-National Material Collection: Muslim classmates and friends from various countries shared mosque-related information, giving our research a global perspective.
  • On-Site Investigations: We visited several iconic mosques in Malaysia, including the Putra Mosque, allowing us to analyze architectural styles firsthand.

Through these methods, we gained an in-depth understanding of mosque structures, colors, and decorations across different regions.

Design Process

We aimed to integrate mosque elements from different regions to reflect the unity of Islamic culture while showcasing its diverse architectural styles.

Concept Determination

  • We combined elements from mosques in Qinghai, China, and Malaysia's floating mosque.
  • The design uses water reflections to symbolize cultural blending.
  • We incorporated simple geometric patterns and smooth Islamic calligraphy lines for a modern aesthetic.

Color Selection

  • The primary color is blue, representing tranquility, faith, and cultural heritage.

Product Application

  • The final logo was printed on bags and tissue boxes.
  • By using everyday products as a medium, we aimed to increase awareness of Muslim culture and encourage people to explore its history and artistic values.

Final Product

  • Logo Concept: Integrates mosques from different regions, using reflection to symbolize cultural connection.
  • Final Presentation: Balances traditional Muslim architectural elements with modern simplicity, making it both culturally rich and aesthetically appealing.

Summary & Gains

This project taught me how to transform cultural elements into modern design while deepening cultural authenticity through field research. The process—from refining our direction to logo creation and product application—was challenging but enlightening.

Ultimately, our goal was not just to design a logo. Through design, we hoped to increase awareness of Muslim culture and promote cultural exchange and understanding.

FEEDBACK

Week 6-7:

Specific Feedback

During weeks six and seven, our team focused on finalizing the Muslim architecture logo and exploring its application on bags and tissue boxes. After extensive research and on-site investigations, we extracted the core visual elements of Muslim architecture and refined them into a modern design.

Logo Refinement

  • Integrated geometric patterns, mosque silhouettes, and Islamic calligraphy to highlight the aesthetics of Muslim architecture.
  • Continuously adjusted the structure and color scheme to balance cultural authenticity with modern design principles.

Product Application

  • Explored different material options to ensure the logo’s adaptability and optimal visual effect on bags and tissue boxes.
  • Evaluated how the design interacts with textures, printing techniques, and product shapes to enhance Muslim architectural characteristics.

Final Presentation & Feedback

  • Organized our research findings, design concept, and product application into a structured PPT presentation.
  • Incorporated feedback from tutors and classmates, refining the design for cultural depth and practical usability in modern products.

General Feedback

Weeks six and seven marked the crucial implementation phase, where we translated our research into tangible designs. This process required:

  • Balancing cultural authenticity and modern aesthetics in design.
  • Continuous refinement and optimization to align the logo with Muslim architectural characteristics.

Ultimately, we successfully developed a unique design solution and presented it in the form of real-world products. This enhanced not only the visual impact of our work but also its cultural significance, promoting a deeper understanding of Muslim architecture through design.
