Proposal - Muslim Cultural Design
During our initial discussions, our group explored various ideas under the theme 'The Application of Muslim Culture in Daily Design.' Since each member had different perspectives on how to present this concept, our discussions lasted a long time. At first, we aimed to express key elements of Muslim culture through everyday items like tableware, phone cases, and pen holders. We also planned to consult our supervisor for guidance on refining our direction.
We considered several possible approaches:
- The influence of Muslim culture on daily design – Examining how Muslim culture is reflected in everyday items such as tableware, phone cases, and household goods.
- Cross-cultural design – Exploring ways to integrate Muslim cultural elements from different regions, such as Chinese Muslims and Malaysian Muslims, into modern design.
- The fusion of halal symbols with modern design – Investigating how to incorporate halal symbols into modern products while maintaining cultural authenticity.
However, our supervisor pointed out that our research direction was too broad and lacked a clear focus. This made us realize the need to narrow our scope to ensure deeper research and practical design outcomes. The supervisor suggested that instead of everyday objects, we could focus on more distinct cultural elements, such as architecture and decorative art, as these areas better highlight the characteristics of Muslim culture.
After further discussion, we decided to shift our focus to Muslim architectural design. This adjustment gave our project a clearer direction, allowing us to explore the geometric patterns and decorative styles found in Muslim architecture and their application in modern design.
This change also introduced new challenges. Unlike designing everyday objects, our research now involves analyzing architectural structures and decorative styles. We have started gathering visual references from mosques, Islamic palaces, and other historical buildings, studying how geometric patterns and Arabic calligraphy contribute to architectural decoration. This process has not only deepened our understanding of Muslim culture but also added cultural depth and historical significance to our design.
FEEDBACK
Week 1-3:
Specific Feedback
During the first three weeks, our group focused on gaining an in-depth understanding of Muslim culture and exploring ways to integrate it into our design.
Phase 1: Research & Inspiration Gathering
- Studied key Islamic cultural elements, including:
- Symbols
- Geometric patterns
- Arabic calligraphy
- Collected a wide range of visual references and design inspirations, forming the foundation for our project.
Phase 2: Concept Development
- Identified three initial design directions:
- Tableware (bowls, cups, chopsticks)
- Mobile phone cases
- Pen holders
- Each concept aimed to balance cultural significance with practical functionality.
- Created sketches and written descriptions for each design, explaining the cultural background and intended use.
Phase 3: Organizing & Presenting Initial Findings
- Compiled research insights, sketches, and design concepts into a structured PowerPoint presentation (PPT).
- The PPT showcased:
- Our research findings
- Design concepts and how they reflect Muslim culture
- The balance between cultural aesthetics and practical application
General Feedback
The first three weeks were crucial in laying the groundwork for our project by combining research with design development. Key takeaways from this phase:
- Successfully integrated core Muslim cultural elements into our initial design ideas.
- Ensured that each concept was not only culturally meaningful but also practical for everyday use.
- Created clear and expressive sketches that effectively conveyed our ideas.
- Developed a well-structured PPT to present our research and concepts in a concise, organized, and visually engaging manner.
This phase provided a strong foundation for the next stages, where we would refine our design direction based on feedback and further research.
