REFLECTION

Experience

Throughout the Advanced Typography course, I worked on three key tasks. The first task involved exploring different typographic systems such as axial, radial, dilational, random, grid, transitional, modular, and bilateral systems. These exercises helped me better understand how to structure typography and apply it effectively in design.

In the second task, I designed a personal wordmark based on my name and applied it to various promotional materials. This process taught me how to create a unique and meaningful logo from scratch.

For the third task, I designed a full typeface, including uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and punctuation. It was a challenging process that required attention to detail and proficiency in font design tools.

Observations

During the first task, I noticed that each typographic system conveys a different mood and message. For example, the axial system feels formal and organized, while the random system looks dynamic and unconventional.

In the second task, I observed how small adjustments, like letter spacing or line thickness, can greatly impact the overall look of a design. Adding personal touches to the wordmark also made it more distinctive and memorable.

When working on the typeface, I realized that consistency and readability are essential. Each letter needed to harmonize with the others while remaining clear at different sizes and formats.

Findings

These tasks showed me how diverse and creative typography can be. Different systems and approaches offer unique ways to solve design problems and create visually interesting results.

I also learned the importance of iteration and feedback. Revising my designs after testing and receiving input made them stronger and more aligned with their purpose.

Finally, I discovered that technical skills in design tools are crucial. Being confident with the software allowed me to bring my ideas to life more effectively.

In summary, these tasks improved my design abilities and gave me a deeper understanding of typography and layout, which will be valuable for future projects.
